CARTES HAS MERGED INTO EMMA
CARTES – Centre of Art and Technology Espoo, run by the Espoo Art and Technology Foundation, has merged into EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, run by the Espoo Art Museum Foundation.
“Now that the merger is complete, we get to start with our thorough analysis of continuing CARTES’ important work as part of EMMA,” says EMMA Museum Director Pilvi Kalhama. “Even though CARTES as its own entity ceases to exist, its values of progressing interdisciplinary dialogue in the arts coincide with the goals of both EMMA and Espoo city.”
The Espoo Art and Technology Foundation’s goal has been to maintain and develop new technologies, as well as to study, develop and perform art that utilizes technology. The foundation was founded in 1989 by Espoo city, Sibelius Academy and the former Helsinki University of Technology (now part of Aalto University). CARTES was opened in 1990 to realize the foundation’s mission. In CARTES’ early years, its main focus was on experimental electronic music and research. In later years, more emphasis was placed on performance and production. Since 2006, CARTES has organized the international new-media festival, Cartes Flux.
